“standing in front of art we could make” — no, you couldn’t. and here’s why.

so, we’ve all seen it. a tiktok or instagram reel where someone stands in front of a modern art piece that, at first glance, looks easy to make. they shrug, laugh, and say, “i could’ve done that.” maybe they throw in a line about how “anyone” could splash paint on a canvas or arrange random shapes.

this assumption—that modern art lacks skill just because it’s simple—is missing a huge part of what makes these pieces so powerful. there’s often an entire story or deep cultural impact behind even the most minimalistic pieces. think of artworks that are more than just visuals; they’re experiences or even political statements.
